Abortion

Think about yourself, whatever you are; the fetus is in the process of becoming another like you. But already it gets complicated, as there is something that is growing before many people are willing to call it a fetus. It started to grow when the male sperm fertilized the female egg. That is what science teaches. For me, from that moment it is another like me. When and where I grew up they called this phenomenon a baby. Never mind what the Catholic Church teaches or anybody else. This is what nature teaches if you’re willing to stop and take a good look at it. After it comes out of it’s mother’s womb, it has to be cared for a number of years or it will die.

Society forbids us to kill this little human being after it comes out of the womb. Yet American society permits us to kill this little human being before term, because it is not recognized as being a human being until it is born. And what is the primary overwhelming reason given for abortion; simply, the baby is not wanted. This ‘not wanted’ has been established by something called the right to privacy. Almost everyone understands, not wanted, but I think only a very few can reason this out of something called a ‘right to privacy’.

Go to some Internet site where the complete text of the majority opinion in Roe vs. Wade is available. Take the time to read it, and it will take some time. You will find its reasoning is not in science, its not in religion, there is nothing in the constitution that even remotely deals with abortion, and its not in case law or some statute. Well where does its rationale come from; this right to privacy that makes it legal to kill the unborn. It comes from the lobbying efforts of the pro-abortion political action groups.

Seven out of nine US Supreme Court Justices agreed to make abortion legal in 1973. Yet after 32 years and approximately 46 million abortions later, abortion is still the most divisive issue in America. President Bush is opposed to abortion. The anti-abortion forces hope Chief Justice Roberts and Bush’s latest appointee; Judge Alito (if confirmed) might move the Supreme Court to overturn Roe vs. Wade. Maybe so? But would it not be better if the legislative branch of our federal government, take action to pass an amendment to the constitution returning the right to rule on abortion to the several states. Yes this would be messy. But real democracy is messy.

Five presidents appointed nine justices. Out of that we got legal abortion. The present court has the same make up. I would prefer the abortion issue be up to the 35 state senators and 65 representatives and governor from my state. Chaos, probably for a while, but each state will get much closer to the will of the people than what we got now. No, abortion is not going away in any event, but most state legislatures would put some fairly stiff restrictions on the abortion on demand culture of today created by Roe vs. Wade.

Response to Abortion:Pat's Reality

I agree with most of what you are trying to say about abortion in this country. As a woman, a mother and a person I would like to leave my opinion with you. Making a human being takes two half cells joined to begin a chain reaction of human life cell by cell, if these two human half cells, a sperm and egg are not joined then they are not the being of human life. Only human life can be detected by this process of fertilization, why is this such an arguement? The starting point is the starting point... if not, then there would be no begining and no end, God is no fool. We, in this country, go on and on about what is what... the first breath of life and the last breath of life, is the only basis for what is legally considered life or death how strange I find this concept, which is revealed as law in Row vs. Wade. I didn't know Roe vs Wade was God. The case is such a pivitol point of how ridiculous our country is. And I say that because all this crap places iresponsibility and ignorance upon the innocent yet borne. Remember, those who have never carried life, that it is only membranes that separate a baby, fetus, human life, whatever you want to call it from it's mother, female host or womb, or whatever you want to call it. Why do we complicate that argument so? Oh, I know, it's because we want to decide when and how human life works, so be can adopt laws for the safety and "privacy" of woman. Women wake up and I'm sorry about the complicated issues of rape and prenatal deformity and incest and all the terrible reasons abortion is so reasonable to argue about! A tough thing I agree. Men and woman share bodies, men and women rape each other, men and woman are infertile and must rely on science and a prayer for conception and gay individuals must rely on science, nature and money to concieve... all these subjects relating to the arguments of conception, science and abortion are what is our real war on terror. It's funny how the word abortion means to end something that doesn't even know it's begining... This process in all of it's wonders, wanted or not, loved made or not, is in my opinion, a momemt of divine interception with the great scientific understanding known as reproduction. We are the only beings in the animal kingdom who have designed abortion. The issue is , yes abortion will always exist, but how do we do it, accept it, and live on with it in society?
The right to privacy is ridiculous to me. Privacy is a solitary notion, isn't it? Abortion is an issue of more than one persons involved, the people having the human cells united and the united cells yet forming. Why is pro life, pro choice and pro abortion all part of a right to privacy?
And what a mess I agree? I teach teenagers about religious morality, a young male student said to me about the issue of what he thought about abortion...his response was, I don't know really but if it's not human life to be agrued about then what the hell is it anyway? I said to myself I like your mother already. I try one by one to teach young people to understand first what in the hell they are doing, so they can think before they act. And one by one teach those teenagers what engaging in sexual acts is all about and what's ahppening in society that traps them at every turn into believing that what goes goes and don't wory you can get out of it! The haunting truth is it's yes a mess. if you don't think. So before you begin, think and abortion will be less of an issue to those who have to be faced with the "choice" about not only pregnancy but what to do about it...It exists and dealing with it is definitely TIME FOR SERIOUS DISCUSSION. Quite frankly, having one is something to some as a relief and to some a disgrace and a haunting truth that will only, in my opinion, be answered in the end. I truly believe the only way to combat the issue so the choice is not an option, in anyones life, forced or not, wanted or not, gay arranged or not ...can all be settled by faith in forgiveness of human sin and the knowledge to know what that is all about, one by one.
